Description

Metapods are Caterpies wrapped tight in hardened silk,
however they are classed as a seperate pokemon as they are clearly concious. They can use moves like harden and reflect they are 'active pokemon' but these moves are natural defenses to protect the chrysalis that Caterpie is in.

It has an immatation 'eye' that is used to proctect itself against potential predators. The eye fools other animals that want to eat it into thinking it has large menaching eyes, warding them away.
The caterpie inside can detect danger using a sonar like system sending out a low pitch clicking, allowing it to see and use its moves to defend itself despite the fact it cannot actually see through the 'eye'.

Unless the caterpie evolves in a trainers care they will naturally attach themselves to tree branches away from the dangerous forest floor below. Their green colouration helps them to blend in perfectly with their surroundings in the canapie.
If a Caterpie evolves while with a trainer they are advised to take it to an incubation centre where the men and women there will care for it untill it becomes a Butterfree.

Though Metapod are legally allowed to battle and can do some signature moves, its seen as weak minded for a trainer to use a pokemon that cannot move. Therefore these Pokemon are rarely seen in battle.

Some trainers beleive that having them 'battle' strengthens them and can speed up evolution. In truth this has been known to be true, but evolution can be acheived at the same speed with special care and regulated tempuratures.

When a Caterpie first evolves their chrysalis are soft, allowing them to be exposed to a variety of dangers. It takes a few weeks for their shell to be hard enough to truly protect them. It is advised that trainers be very careful with their Metapod when newly evolved, so not to hurt it.

Metapod have the ability to shed their shells once and a while to help harden and revitalize their bodies. You can tell when a metapod is about to shed as their shell become dry and flakey, unlike its usual smooth, polished feel.

The general gestation period of a Metapod is 3-4 months until it evolves.
